The non-profit Southern Alberta Selects Hockey Association is a registered society that has been run solely by volunteers. It was formed from the Colts circa 1987/1988 to provide opportunities for
advancing amateur hockey players in Southern Alberta to compete and play against
top amateur hockey players from other parts of the world. The association typically sends teams to a local tournament in Alberta and to one or two tournaments in other parts of Canada, the USA or Europe.
A cornerstone of the Selects program is that we ensure that each boy or girl is an accelerated caliber hockey player. The teams are dedicated to developing each player to achieve their potential. While each team is coached to win their games with every player contributing, the coaches understand that winning is not the only thing to consider at the end of the game, but how well each player participated. The focus is on providing a positive, learning experience. Traditionally, Select teams are formed early on in the New Year but do not commence practices until the completion of Minor Hockey. Each spring the Selects Association forms
approximately 14 teams under the following divisions: Boys; Minor Novice, Major Novice, Minor Atom, Major Atom, Minor Pee-Wee, Major Pee-Wee, Minor Bantam and Major Bantam. Girls; Minor Pee-Wee, Major Pee-Wee, Minor Bantam, Major Bantam and two Midget teams.
A skill development component for Initiation and Novice boys, Novice girls and Atom girls forms part of the program. The skills component is the one area that the association sees as an expansion component. The non-parent head coaches of the Selects Association are individuals who have played, coached or been involved in hockey at an elite level. |
